Info about Virtua Fighter Crossroads from Summer Game Fest 2026

Yakuza developer RGG Studio has been linked to a new Virtua Fighter project since at least 2024, though little was known about the game beyond a teaser trailer and snippets of out-of-context gameplay. This changed at last night’s Summer Games Fest Live 2026 with the premiere of the first official trailer for Virtua Fighter Crossroads and the announcement of a 2027 release.

The trailer focuses more on narrative than gameplay, acting as an introduction to the main story mode plot and a new character named Cielo. Close-quarters, one-on-one combat appears to remain the core of the new Virtua Fighter, exemplified by Cielo throwing a man into electrical cables in a rather brutal manner.

Following the trailer reveal, Sega and RGG Studio hosted a dedicated showcase for the game. Creative Director Riichiro Yamada explained that it blends genres to deliver both a fighting game and a narrative adventure in a single-player campaign, calling it a “fighting adventure” experience. The game is set in Vilasapara, a fictional Southeast Asian town gripped by corruption and the influence of a local crime syndicate. Both the trailer and showcase depict typical Southeast Asian town features, such as eateries and sidewalk vendors using monoblock chairs.

Designed as an anthology, the game centers on four main characters, with Cielo Salinas replacing Akira as the face of the franchise. Much like the Yakuza series, players will encounter numerous side quests. Story mode battles will merge Virtua Fighter’s combat system with action-adventure gameplay, featuring full contact and close quarters fighting styles. Additionally, the game will throw the protagonist into multi-opponent battles rather than sticking solely to the one-vs-one fights seen in previous Virtua Fighter titles. Naturally, VS battles remain, retaining the franchise’s simple combat mechanics and the combos used to deal increased damage.
